Fishing has continued to be good here in Guatemala and as predicted the blue marlin have started biting and we’ll expect them to be around for the summer months. We normally start seeing more yellowfin tunas and big mahi’s showing up for the summer months as well as the sailfish bite so don’t be thinking this is a November to May fishery only here in Guate. We have some great deals available for the months ahead so get in touch and we’ll put you on ‘em.

April 17 we fished John Stafford, Jamie Robichaux, Craig Linberg and David Dennis from Texas for one day aboard ALLURE. The guys first trip to Guatemala ended well, we fished the edge and got into a couple of sails and worked the area hard hoping for a blue. Inshore to the west there was a fairly reasonable sailfish bite that we got to late in the day and just before lines out we got the one we were looking for, a very aggressive 300lb blue marlin for Craig and sailfish double header to end the day. 18 sails raised for the day, 15 bites and 9 releases as well as the blue.

Jim Franklin was back down in Guate for a couple of days fishing this time with a few of his staff and some clients. This group had a great time down at the OASIS and with us on ALLURE experiencing some good fishing with 33 sails raised 29 bites and 18 releases, as well as one 350lb blue, missing another pushing the 300lb mark and boating a nice 30lb mahi. Good fishing and good times!

We were marking wads of bait from 20ft-150ft down in 3000ft of water and working these areas resulted in some great afternoon action with a late in the day quad and a few double headers from some cover ups.

April 12-13th Mark Smith Group, 34 sailfish, 2 from 3 blue marlin
Mark Smith came back to Guatemala with his group of himself, Steve Widner, Terry Tollette, Charles Barlow, Kurt Primeaux, Harold Thibodeaux, Hardy Frank III and Shelby Gibbs. The group fished on ALLURE and A-FIN-ITY for 2 days and enjoyed good fishing and great times down at SAILFISH OASIS. First day with the group we missed a nice blue in the 600lb+ class that crashed the teaser and the pitched mackerel, a little bad luck with that one! They did get the release on a nice 450lb blue for Terry Tollette and another pushing the 200lb mark for Kurt Primeaux as well as 34 sails and a nice 40lb mahi.

April 11th Jamie Dishman was down for a day of off-shore fishing and timed his trip well, we released 15 by lunch and then changed over to the fly, a little tough to get the fish to tease though we did get a couple more on the bait and one on the fly for the afternoon to end with 18 releases on the baits and one on the fly from a bunch more in the spread that would not tease…Nice going Jamie!

April 7th and 8th we welcomed for their first time to Guatemala the Old family from Beaumont, Texas for a couple of days of fishing over the Easter weekend. Things started slowly though for the 2 days we ended up with 27 sails raised and 14 releases from 23 bites which included a few double headers and Helen Elizabeth opting to release her sailfish underwater….Jay Old is in the up-coming elections running for congress and we wish him all the luck in his endeavors.

April 4th-5th Nick Johnson was back this year, this time with his girlfriend Kristin Shultz and ‘el jefe’ Craig Johnson, fishing was little slow over the 2 days though slow for Guatemala is still not too bad with 18 raised 16 bites and 9 saifish released…

April 1st and 2nd Staillion Group

Stallion had their annual Manager Meeting down here at SAILFISH OASIS LODGE and took a couple of days out fishing aboard ALLURE, A-FIN-ITY and CIRLCE HOOK. Fishing was a little slow they everyone got into a few billfish releases each and had a blast down here with a few mahi’s boated and 35 sailfish released over 2 days of fishing.

March 26-30th we fished as part of the Mike Levitt group Joe, Rick, Nick and Aaron for a few days. Fishing came good toward the end of their trip and we had a great time with these guys over the course of their days on ALLURE. WE ended up raising 51 sails, getting 44 bites and releasing 31 as well as a few mahi’s and missing a blue marlin on their first day out. We hope to see you guys back down here again….

Right now we have deep blue water just 3NM off-shore all the way out to the edge, there are few boats out though with all the bait and quality water we are looking forward to the coming days on the water, as mentioned the blue marlin are about and there is a reasonable sailfish bite as well, out wide there are tunas to be found so it is all looking good. We have days open in May and can offer some good deals from May through August. If anyone is interested in staying out and trying for swordfish, now is the time to try with the local long line fisherman usually doing better in these months as well. Life is short, come to Guatemala to enjoy it with some of the best fishing around!!

Fishing has remained for the most part very good here in Guatemala, though recently the sailfish bite has slowed it seems to be coming back and ALLURE has had the hum recently with 8 marlin bites in the last 6 fishing days. Here is the breakdown….

We welcomed back Chris Bean aka Snr Frijole for the second time this season, this time with friends from Houston and Beaumont TX as above. Another great timed trip by Chris as he hit the fishing pretty good again, over the 2 days we raised 78 sailfish and released 45 from 67 bites, pretty good averages! We also raised 2 blue marlin on the second day out though could get a bite out of neither of them. Late on the second day we changed to the fly and things slowed considerably though we did get a couple of bites….As always with Chris and his crews we had a great time and look forward to the next trip.
March 4th-9th Team Circle Hook 81 releases and 1 blue marlin

Circle Hook owner Bryan O’Dell came down for an extended stay to SAILFISH OASIS and had a blast as always, for the first 3 days of his trip fishing with Cantey Smith and Owen Gallagher the guys hit some great fishing with a red hot bite releasing 70 odd sails. Bryan took Wednesday the 7th off to see off the crew and welcome in Chirs Yarborugh and Drew McCullough for 2 days of fishing. The sail bite cooled off a little though they still released a few sails, a nice blue marlin for Chris and boated several yellowfin tunas and mahi’s to round off another great trip to Guatemala.

Next in ALLURE half owner Hill Dishman fished with good friends and Guatemalan regulars Brad Klein and Dan Wheat, this time introducing the great fishing here in Guatemala to another good friend Erik Hansen from San Antonio. Another well timed trip with 128 sails raised, 100 bites and 62 sailfish releases along with 1 stripe marlin and 1 blue marlin in 3 days!!. With the bite being slow just before their arrival a body of fish pushed in form the south along the eastern edge of the pocket and the bite turned on. Lots of bait, bonito’s, sails and marlin, and some big mahi’s in the 35-45lb range crashing the baits and spitting up wads of squid once hooked. The sailfish action was nothing short of hot at several stages through the trip with a couple of quad hook-up’s released and a few triple headers from some absolute cover ups. Brad Klein has been coming to Guatemala for the past 12 or so years and had never caught a marlin, well this time round he hooked and released a stripey on the first day…..

Then on the last day out early in the morning he pitched the mackerel bait to a hot 200lb+ blue marlin off the bridge teaser to complete a personal slam….

Way to go Brad!! As well as hot billfish action we also got into some nice mahi’s like this one for Erik Hansen….

At the same time down at the OASIS we had the Low family in for a Spring Break to remember. Fishing aboard KNOTWORK a 35 Luhrs and having never had a whole lot of billfish action they were amped up after hearing of the exploits of Erik Hansen and the rest of the guys down at the lodge on the day of their arrival. No disappointments here, they released a total of 45 sails and boated a few slammer mahi’s in 2 days to round off the best fishing trip and Spring Break ever. They finished off the last 2 days of their trip in the beautiful Antigua, touring coffee farms and soaking in the 16th century Spanish colonial town.

March 15-16 Lindley Group, 3 blue marlin, 5 sailfish

Next in we had for their 3rd year running John Lindley and Tom Preston, this time bringing in Guatemalan first timers John’s brother Steve and son Matthew down for Spring Break. We started in close and missed a stripe marlin first off the bat at the bottom of the pocket, it was slow for the next hour so we made a late run for the edge though it was worth it out there. For the day we raised 24 sails had 19 bites…… a few things went wrong coupled with plain bad luck and we released just 4 sails, the luck changed when the last bite of the day hot on the teaser was a 180lb blue for Tom Preston, the fish pulled hard though Tom did well releasing the fish on the 50lb stand-up gear.

We started short of where we ended the previous day and John got into a feisty blue after an hour of trolling out to the spot. Soon after letting it go we had another hot on the teaser, John got the bite again and came tight to a nice 250lb fish…

John got the release on that and we took some time out getting some awesome shots on the Go-Pro. Good fishing John!! With a couple of stripey’s being caught to the east of us we concentrated our efforts there hoping for a stripey to complete the slam, though, no luck there. We had another 2 sailfish bites releasing one for the rest of the day and a nice mahi for John….

March 18, 19 and 20, Zingula Group 3 blue marlin bites 18 sailfish raised….

We welcomed back Doug Zingula and Hollis Perkins to SAILFISH OASIS this time with father and son team Paul and Jon Sokol. Both Paul and John had fished Guatemala before though their first time at the OASIS and on ALLURE. The sailfish bite had dropped off and it was pretty tough out there for everyone, boats covering ground trying to find ‘the bite’. We fished up the eastern side of the pocket and the first fish of the day was a blue marlin, Jon’s first, a small blue of about 130lb’s it crashed the short teaser and we pitched the 30lb tackle to it. Great sport on the 30lb it was too giving Jon a good work out before getting it boatside…..

We worked hard the rest of the day raising 3 sailfish and releasing 1 from 3 bites. The next day we covered alot of ground, the highlight was a 350lb blue crashing the short teaser, we got the mackerel back there and had the best bite of the year, on the second wave the marlin came out head and shoulders right to left, an incredible bite though we missed it, even when it came back the second time, crushing the bait though not eating. For the rest of the day we raised 3 sails. Looking to finish the trip on a high we ran way down near the western corner, about 45NM. The move paid off with fairly consistent action in the morning with the sails, a couple of nice mahi’s and a blue of about 200lb’s, another great bite and series of jumps once hooked. We finished up raising 12 sails, releasing 7 from 11 bites and changed it up to the fly in the afternoon getting a text book bite for Jon.
A little slow by Guatemalan standards though it looks like things are on the turn and we are expecting better things in the weeks to come. The blue marlin are out there and there are still a few stripeys about as well. We’ve had some great teaser bites the last few fishing days with the Legend Lures black head Piper being the hot teaser, from the 8 marlin bites 5 have come up on the black head and one on the chrome head Krakatoa, the other 2 ate the rigger baits. Great teasers, they work….

Friday 17th Feb, Hill Dishman arrived a couple of days before the rest of the group to get in some time on the fly and spend some time looking for the bite….We sarted the day just 8NM from the breakwall and after half an hour of pulling teasers we raised a blue marlin on the flat line teaser. The fish teased in, albeit slowly and disappeared just before casting range, we pitched the mackerel though never saw it again. For the rest of the day we trolled up the western side of the ‘pocket’ and found some pretty good action in the afternoon raising 16 on the teasers, mixing it up we went 4 for 6 on the fly and 8 from 8 bites on the bait.
18th, with the current pushing to the east and wanting to cover some ground we fished the majority of the day up the eastern side of the pocket looking for a 1000lber and a bunch of sails……we found neither…..raised 9 sails got 2 bites on the fly and released 1 from 3 on the bait. At least we knew where not to go the following day….

CRAIG JOHNSON GROUP 59 SAILS AND 1 BLUE MARLIN IN 2 DAYS

ALLURE owners Craig Johnson and Hill Dishman hosted the big group down for Craig’s birthday February 19 and 20. Mixing it up between 2 boats, the 61ft Viking ‘BOLITA’ and ALLURE the group experienced good fishing and had a great time down at the ‘OASIS’. Over the 2 days on the water between both boats we raised 110 sailfish with 102 bites and releasing 59 sails as well as ‘Bolita’ having the marlin hum raising 2 blues and releasing one 300lber for ‘Goose’ Lavikka. We also nailed some nice bull mahi’s with Craig Johnson getting 2 near identical sized beauties from the 4 mahi’s boated….

On ALLURE we finished the last day out with a little mayhem raising a quad and releasing a triple out of 4 bites with the Legend Lures # 12 Piper doing the majority of the damage today…..hot teaser, 2 of the quad were hot after it’s tail and we got great bites off both of them!

Feb 20 and 21 we welcomed first timers to Guatemala Russell Harbison, John Manning and Craig Williams for 2 days on the water and 3 nights at SAILFISH OASIS. Russell had never caught a billfish before this trip and ended up with a bunch of sails released on conventional tackle and a couple on the fly. Over the 2 days of fishing we raised 76 sails and had a nice blue marlin that came up on the white head Legend Lures Piper though did not switch to the pitched mackerel. Late in the day we switched it up on the fly and all the guys got into their first sail releases on the long wand. Exciting stuff, with some incredible bites……Thanks for some great shots John! It’s all about the bite…..

From here we had a couple of days in before welcoming more first timers to Guatemala, from Victoria, South Texas….
KISALUS GROUP 53 RELEASES IN 2 DAYS

Feb 25th-26th Experienced fisho’s from the Gulf these guys were hands on and good fun to fish with, they timed their trip well with a great bite here in Guatemala. Over the 2 days of fishing we raised 87 sails and returned with the good averages of 53 releases from 78 bites!!! Our first day out was mostly teaser action with the majority of the sails hot on the teasers, the #12 chrome head Krakatoa definitely the red hot teaser for the day, and we had some great aggressive bites to the switched ballyhoo right behind the transom. Things slowed down a little on the second day with an even mix of rigger bites and teaser bites though still great action all round with a couple of triple headers and several doubles for the day……

All groups commented on the beautiful setting, great accommodation and exceptional food down at the ‘OASIS’. The fishing is second to none and everyone is talking about return trips. It’s all good in Guatemala…….

213 SAILFISH & 3 BLUE MARLIN, FEB 3RD-5TH

The Collin Ocker organized group of 15 anglers: Chad Walker, Darrel Scanlan, Chris Schadedd, Cody Jordan, Wes Jordan, Ken Culbreth, Mark Thibaut, Clay Morphis, Randy Wendel, Jaine Morphis, John Moyd, Mike Levoi, Mike Griffin, Paul Kennedy and Collin Ocker .
Fishing off 4 boats the group experienced an exceptional bite down here in Guatemala releasing 213 sailfish and 3 blue marlin as well as boating several large mahi’s over Superbowl Weekend February 3rd through 5th. Aboard ALLURE, A-FIN-ITY, RELEASE and SPINDRIFT the guys drew boats daily to mix it up with no set teams, the only rule being no assistance from the mates on the hook-ups. First day out the fleet was spread out in the morning looking for the bite though ended up in the same area in the afternoon with between 9-15 releases amongst the boats. This is Guatemala so there is always something better out there. On ALLURE we went wide out to the western corner looking for an incoming bite, after a long run the move seemed to have paid off with an aggressive teaser bite from an est 250lb blue marlin after just 5mins of lines in. Mark Thibaut did a great job with the pitched mackeral and after a good bite came tight to this fish that put on a show with several long greyhounding runs…



After a 20min fight on the 50lb stand-up gear Mark got the fish boatside for a healthy release. Nearer the edge we raised another blue around a log that came up on a couple of teasers though did not switch to the pitch bait. We did manage to get each of the guys some slammer bull mahi’s though, the log was loaded with small bonitos and some live baiting resulted with a good haul…

Trolling up the edge another blue in the 400lb class crashed the bridge teaser, we got a great bite on the pitch bait though missed it. Later in the afternoon we raised our 4th blue for the day, this one teased in great and Wes Jordan did the job with an awesome bite just feet from the transom with the pitched mackeral bait. The fish was a tough SOB staying down and dirty for the majority and after 45min on the stand-up gear Wes got it boatside for the release…….

Meanwhile 25NM to the east of us early in the afternoon Chip Shafer aboard Old Reliable found a great sailfish bite for the rest of the fleet to get into. They got there early in the afternoon and the bite went off with RELEASE having no sailfish releases by midday finishing up with 23 in just a couple of hours with doubles and triples the norm. A red hot bite for all the boats for the last couple of hours of the day. We all fished there the following day and experienced a great bite with between 51-65 sails raised per boat and up to 30 releases. On ALLURE, Wes had the blue marlin luck once again releasing a tough 250lb+ blue to round off an incredible day on the water for the group with 109 sails released and one blue on their last day out, all on circle hooks ensuring healthy releases. To top it off Superbowl that night was a cracker. A great weekend had by all….!!!

80 SAILFISH RELEASES IN 2 DAYS

Fishing aboard ALLURE and A-FIN-ITY the bite stayed good though slowly moving further off-shore to the east. The long runs were worth it though with 80 sailfish released in 2 days between the boats, we also raised a blue marlin that crashed the bridge teaser though disappeared just as quickly. All in all another great couple of days on the water with this group. With the bite seeming to be moving and slowing down it was time to look for something new the next day….

GRUPO BRAZILIANO 245 SAILFISH & 1 BLACK MARLIN IN 3 DAYS!!

Feb 9th through 11th we wecomed back Team Brazil to the SAILFISH OASIS, 18 anglers and a couple of ‘observers’ all from Rio de Janeiro for 3 days of fishing for their annual Brazilian International Tournament. The format was the same as last year with 6 teams of 3 anglers fishing aboard ALLURE, A-FIN-ITY, CHUBASCON, CIRCLE HOOK, KNOT WORK and PERLA DEL MAR. Fishing to IGFA rules with 20lb line we had:
Team 1, Helio Manques, Lula Bulhoes and Lucas Bulhoes
Team 2, Raphael Coutinno, Guilhermino Lima and Antonino Bitasi
Team 3, Ciba Eduardo, Luiz Pintgirro and Roberto Pitta
Team 4, Elton Vasconcellos, Rodrigo Mattos and Gilberto Malvares
Team 5, Paulo Campos, Pedro Groberio and Guilerme Campos
Team 6, Sandro Lahmann, Joao Lahmann and Renato Barbosa
A true anglers/team tournament was had with all the teams having a fair share of shots amongst the boats, it came down to the better anglers. With the bite off-shore fading the fleet searched inshore and found a pretty reasonable bite inshore to the west, just 12NM from the marina with up to 18 releases per boat. The second day of the tournament took off with boats getting up to 43 bites and releasing up to 25. At the end of day 2 it was wide open with Team 4 of Elton, GG and Tunicao holding on to a slim lead of 35 sailfish releases and 1 marlin. Last years winners Team 6 of Sandro, Joao and Renato released 25 on day 2 to get them from 4th to second with 33 releases overall.

Last day out the bite slowed some though ended up just 8NM from the marina and all the boats raised over 20 sails a piece. Team 6, lead by Sandro had a great day releasing 19 sails to take it out with a total of 52 releases in 3 days. Team 4 with Elton, GG and Tunicao came in a close second with 48 releases and Team 5 with Paulo, Pedro and Guilherme a couple of fish back with 45 releases. Another great tournament and a great time had by Team Brazil!!! We had a alot of fun fishing this group with plenty of laughs and a fair share of sancochos…..El Matador!!

All in all some pretty spectacular fishing and on it goes, marlin are in the mix and of course some big mahi’s as well. We still have a few openings and the fishing is good here right through till the end of August with traditionally more marlin in the mix from later in April on through the summer. The New Year bash at the SAILFISH OASIS just gets bigger and better, Hill and Donelle Dishman in party mode with Willie from the Blue Dawgs….This year’s was the best yet with a huge asado (BBQ), big firework display and great party atmosphere for the capacity filled lodge.
To the fishing….

As predicted the bite went off before Christmas with boats releasing 30-40 sails a piece and some blues in the mix as well. Straight after Christmas we had the Denman Heard group down fishing 27th-28th. The fishing had slowed some and with a cold front pushing through though we still got all the guys into a few sailfish releases as well as a couple of tunas for the boys.

In between on our days off the bite picked up big time with a great blue marlin bite on the 29th, there were over 30 blues raised among the small fleet out with boats releasing up to 3, it slowed the next day for the marlin though the sailfish bite picked up in its place.

On the 31st we welcomed back Capt Kevin and Alicia Deerman who were fishing with us the same time last year on ALLURE to be joined by Hill and Donelle Dishman the following day. Also at the lodge were the Bryan O’Dell group of 6 fishing aboard the Circle Hook over the same period. Both boats experienced great fishing with the sails biting and blue marlin making their presence felt as well….
With Capt Kevin and Alicia on the 31st we fished up the west side of the pocket and the first fish of the day a marlin pushing water and knocking down the rigger bait though not eating. From here on in we got into a pretty good sailfish bite with 22 sails raised and 10 releases from 16 bites, Alicia was on form releasing ALL the fish and late in the day we had a nice blue of a solid 350lb’s pushing up on the flat line teaser. The mackerel was pitched and after long seconds we got a good bite and Alicia did a great job on the rod releasing the last blue marlin to be caught in Guatemala for 2011.

The fish put on a helluva show and topped off a great day on the water.

That night the lodge was filled to capacity plus and we saw in 2012 with a party to be remembered……..at least by those who can remember it….
1st day of 2012 Hill and Donelle joined Kevin and Alisia, nursing some hangover’s it was a late start leaving the dock sometime after 10 . Back to the area we were the previous day the fish had done a bit of a disappearing act, still for a short day we raised 8 sails and released 4 from 7 bites.

On the 2nd with Hill and Kevin we decided to look for the fish a bit more to the west, finding blue water and birds working we got into some pretty good action early on raising 9 sails by 1030 and releasing 4 from 7 bites. It was looking good though with bigger things on our minds we ran another 10NM out to the edge. On our second pass over the drop off we got the bite we were looking for and Kevin got himself onto a nice blue pushing the 300lb mark on 30lb test….

This fish was a brute and Capt Kevin put as much heat on the 30lb line as was possible, we tried different angles though it stayed deep and dirty on us for over an hour, coming up occasionally to show us it’s girth…..

Another late start on the 3rd due to a cold front pushing through and creating a short sharp chop had us check the inside area and the bottom of the pocket just 7NM out. It was the right move with an afternoon bite turning on, 18 sails raised and 8 released from 14 bites as well as 4 nice mahi’s boated.

The weather laid down for us on the 4th and the blue water had pushed in, we put lines in the water just 5NM off the breakwall and were pretty much straight into some good action which held right through the day. Mixing it up on the fly and on the baits we had some hot fish tease in and some great fly bites with a couple of shots at doubles on the fly.

It was a great day on the water and just after lunch we raised a BIG blue on the long rigger teaser, the fish teased in hot and Hill was ready on the fly, though with the fish pushing as much water as it was I made the call to pitch the bait, we got the bite though unfortunately missed it. Still a great fish to see just 8NM out! We finished the day raising 27 sails, releasing 5 from 12 bites on the fly and 6 from 10 bites on the baits

The following day the bite inshore was just as good with boats releasing up to 24 on conventional tackle and up to 8 for boats on the fly.
January 6th and 7th we fished with the Jack Pitts group consisting of….

The fish had done another move and were hard to find though we did get everyone into some sails and mahi’s including these…

The blue water is pushing in from the west and it looks like things are going to get good here in the next few days. We are booked fairly solid through January though there are some openings in February, these are prime dates and the fishing has usually been good with some red-hot bites in the past. March and April are also great months to fish here and with the marlin bite picking up later in the year and the tunas turning on as well.
